A short history

The shrine’s exact founding date is unknown. It was revered as a protector of the capital in the Heian period. Its two main buildings were rebuilt in 1863, according to Kyoto’s official tourism guide.

Before you go

For relationship prayers, visit Aioi-sha, a subsidiary shrine dedicated to Musuhi no Kami; this is distinct from the main shrine’s kami. Plan the forest walk separately from the paid Oidono and museum visit. The romon and Kawai Shrine close at different times; formal-prayer reception hours are not confirmed goshuin-counter hours.

Getting there
Kyoto’s official tourism guide lists about 7 minutes on foot from Keihan Demachiyanagi Station, or about 4 minutes from the Shinaoibashi city-bus stop. This is the Kawai Shrine visit, not the longer walk to Shimogamo’s main sanctuary.
