Shingu

Kumano Hayatama Taisha

熊野速玉大社

Bright vermilion buildings and a sacred nagi tree make this a compact Kumano Sanzan visit in Shingu. Choose it when you want a World Heritage shrine reachable on foot from the town's railway station rather than a mountain approach.

Enshrined kami

Kumano Hayatama no Okami (Izanagi no Mikoto) · Kumano Fusumi no Okami (Izanami no Mikoto)

A short history

Its traditions connect the Kumano kami with Gotobiki Rock at Kamikura Shrine. The later worship site gave Shingu, meaning 'new shrine', its name. Hayatama is now a component of the World Heritage property Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.

Before you go

Kamikura Shrine is a separate destination with a steep stone-step approach; it is not included in this visit allowance. National Treasure objects in the museum do not mean that the shrine buildings themselves are National Treasures.
