A short history

Shrine tradition places its founding in 593. Taira no Kiyomori rebuilt it in the shinden-zukuri style in 1168.

Before you go

Choose your travel date and month in the Miyajima Tourism Association tide calendar linked in Sources. Its reference levels are above 250 cm for the shrine to appear surrounded by water and below 100 cm for approaching the great torii on foot. These are Hiroshima Port predictions; timing can differ at Miyajima, so follow local conditions and restrictions. The shrine closes 30 minutes earlier from 15 October. Wear footwear suitable for gaps between the corridor boards.
