A short history
The official account dates its foundation to 859 by Fujiwara no Yamakage, with kami brought from Kasuga. The shrine later became associated with Yoshida Shinto and its founder Yoshida Kanetomo.
Before you go
Some approaches involve steps or slopes. The official guide limits Daigengu inner-precinct visits to January 1–3, Setsubun and the first day of each month, normally about 08:00–16:00. Check current notices; ordinary visits are from the middle gate.
