A short history
The first sanctuary was established in 725 according to the official FAQ. The three main sanctuaries enshrine Hachiman, Hime Okami and Empress Jingu; their Hachiman-zukuri architecture is designated a National Treasure.
Before you go
The local custom is two bows, four claps and one bow, with worship at both upper and lower shrines. The official FAQ describes a monorail but notes maintenance closures; confirm availability before depending on it for access.
