A short history

Its foundation dates to the 1869 ceremony enshrining three kami associated with Hokkaido’s development. The shrine moved to Maruyama in 1871. Emperor Meiji was additionally enshrined in 1964, when it took its present name.

This entry is the Maruyama shrine, not the separate downtown Tongu. Winter paths may be snowy or icy; flowering dates vary. Follow temporary closures and local signs.
