A short history

Amaterasu is enshrined at the lower Hishizumi-no-miya and Susanoo at the upper Kami-no-miya. The shrine buildings, associated with construction in the Edo period, are Important Cultural Properties. Mythological traditions are distinguished from the buildings’ history.

Before you go

The official FAQ says there is no toilet inside the precinct and directs visitors to public facilities near the bus stop and coast. Steps lead to the upper sanctuary. Its approximately 15-minute walk to the lighthouse is separate from the shrine allowance, as are return travel and lighthouse sightseeing.
