TORII ATLAS

Shrines for beauty prayers

A cultural prayer association, not a promise of an outcome. Check each shrine’s source and visit information.

Beauty prayers express hopes for beauty in appearance and in the heart. Kawai Shrine, a subsidiary shrine within Shimogamo Shrine, is known for its mirror-shaped ema, wooden prayer plaques decorated with a face. This category describes a worship tradition, not a promise of physical changes; it does not apply automatically to the parent shrine.

Beauty prayers
Highlights
Hand-mirror-shaped ema associated with beauty prayers · The subsidiary-shrine precinct within Shimogamo
Estimated visit
20–40 min

Kawai Shrine worship and a short look at the mirror-ema tradition. Excludes travel from the station, ema preparation or offering queues, Shimogamo’s main shrine, extended forest walks and special paid visits.

Getting there
Kyoto’s official tourism guide lists about 7 minutes on foot from Keihan Demachiyanagi Station, or about 4 minutes from the Shinaoibashi city-bus stop. This is the Kawai Shrine visit, not the longer walk to Shimogamo’s main sanctuary.
