Enshrined kami

Hikonagisatake Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto (Ugayafukiaezu)

A short history

Udo's traditions concern Ugayafukiaezu, the kami described as Emperor Jimmu's father in Japanese mythology. The cave has long been a place of worship, with a history of combined Shinto and Buddhist practice before the Meiji-era separation. The surrounding Udo area is nationally designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty.

Before you go

Steps lead down to the cave sanctuary; some approach ramps do not make the whole route step-free. Contact the shrine about mobility needs and follow weather closures. Undama is a cultural practice, not a promise that wishes will be granted.
