A short history

Its foundation tradition dates to 757, with later reconstruction associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi's rebuilding of Hakata. As the area's guardian shrine, it remains closely connected with Hakata Gion Yamakasa, a festival included in UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage listing.

Before you go

Yamakasa floats are normally displayed outside the festival period but are replaced in June. UNESCO intangible heritage applies to the festival tradition, not World Heritage status for the shrine grounds. Do not drink the sacred well water; follow on-site signs.
