A short history
Shrine tradition dates Toyouke’s arrival in Ise to about 1,500 years ago, to provide the sacred meals offered to Amaterasu. Geku remains a distinct principal sanctuary within Ise Jingu. Its ceremonies and forest precinct make it more than a preliminary stop before Naiku.
Before you go
Geku followed by Naiku is the customary order, not an obligatory rule. Follow the posted left-side walking rule at Geku. Some subsidiary shrines have steps. The main sanctuary, Sengukan museum and Naiku are different visit scopes. Observe photo restrictions and obtain prior permission for commercial photography. Prayer categories do not promise results.
