Hakone, Kanagawa

Hakone Shrine

箱根神社

Choose Hakone Shrine for a wooded, stepped approach and the red lakeside torii at Lake Ashi. Pair it with a Hakone itinerary, leaving room for bus travel and a possible photo queue rather than judging the visit by shrine time alone.

What to see

  • The Heiwa no Torii beside Lake Ashi
  • Cedar-lined approach and shrine buildings
  • Kuzuryu Shrine’s Shingu beside the main shrine

A short history

The shrine’s account dates its establishment at the present lakeside site to 757 by the monk Mangan. It developed from mountain worship and later received the support of warriors including Minamoto Yoritomo. Its historic identity as Hakone Gongen reflects the former combination of Shinto and Buddhist traditions.

Before you go

There are steps between the lake and main shrine. The map point marks the main shrine precinct, not the lakeside torii. Kuzuryu Shingu is adjacent; Kuzuryu Hongu and summit Mototsumiya are separate destinations. Allow extra time if a photo queue forms, and do not block worshippers. Blessing labels reflect traditional prayers, not promised outcomes.
