A short history
The official history connects the shrine with the stories of Yamasachihiko and Toyotamahime, while stating that its foundation date is unknown. Access to the island was once restricted before opening to general visitors during the Edo period.
Before you go
Sunset closing differs from the staffed-counter timetable. Plan a daytime visit if you want amulets or goshuin. Shrine worship and a longer island walk are different time commitments.
